Russia Appoints 37-Year-Old CEO at Tupolev Amid Bomber Production Crisis

Russia Appoints New CEO at Strategic Aircraft Maker Tupolev

Russia has replaced the leadership of Tupolev, a key manufacturer of strategic aircraft, appointing Yuri Ambrosimov as it’s new chief executive. Ambrosimov, 37, succeeds Aleksandr Bobryshev, 76, according too reports from Defense Express and other Russian industry sources.

This leadership change follows a previous round of management rotations at Tupolev that occurred in 2024. The timing suggests a continued effort to refresh leadership within the company. While the reasons for Bobryshev’s replacement haven’t been officially stated, it comes amid increased pressure on Russia’s defense industry to accelerate production and modernize its aircraft fleet due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Tupolev is responsible for developing and producing several critical aircraft for the Russian military, including the Tu-160 strategic bomber – wich Russia is actively working to modernize – and the Tu-95 Bear, a long-range strategic bomber and missile platform. The company also plays a role in the growth of long-range cruise missiles.

Ambrosimov’s appointment is notable given his relatively young age for such a senior position in a major defense contractor. Details about his prior experience are still emerging, but he has been involved in Russia’s aerospace industry for some time. Reuters reports that he previously worked at the United Aircraft Corporation, a state-owned aerospace and defense conglomerate.

Analysts suggest the move could signal a desire for faster innovation and a more aggressive approach to meeting the demands of the Russian military. The war in ukraine has highlighted the importance of modernizing Russia’s air force and increasing its production capacity. It remains to be seen how Ambrosimov’s leadership will impact Tupolev’s future projects and its contribution to Russia’s defense capabilities.
