Russell Brand Convicted of Rape and Sexual Assault Faces Prison
Convicted in London Court After Four-Week Trial
Russell Brand was convicted on Friday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, 1News reported.
Judge Joel Bennathan stated that the 51-year-old actor and comedian faces a significant prison term when he is sentenced on Tuesday. Brand, who denied all charges, showed no emotion as the verdicts were read by a jury of eight men and four women after more than eight hours of deliberations over two days. When the judge denied a bail request to let Brand see his children over fears he might flee, the defendant gestured to his lawyers that he was OK and repeatedly told them, "I’m good, I’m good, I’m good," before being taken into custody.
"I regret the hardship caused to the children, of course," Judge Bennathan said, noting that "the hardship has been caused by serious criminal offending by their father."
From 1999 to 2009: The Charges and the Defense
The jury cleared Brand of two additional rape counts, one count of attempted indecent assault, and one count of oral rape in a restroom. The charges spanned incidents from 1999 to 2009.
Prosecutor described Brand during the trial as a ruthless, calculated, and manipulative sexual predator, while jurors heard excerpts from Brand’s memoir in which he wrote about relentlessly pursuing his desires. Brand testified that he was obsessed with sex as a young man and lived a promiscuous life, but maintained he never forced anyone to do anything against their will.

Assaults Across London Venues
The convictions stem from four separate incidents across the British capital during the height of Brand’s fame. He was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman during a birthday party at a London bar in 2004, and of kissing and groping another woman at a London radio station in 2004 or 2005.
Jurors also convicted Brand of anally raping a fan at his Hampstead home after meeting her backstage at his February 2009 comedy show at the Hammersmith Apollo. The final guilty verdict involved the sexual assault of a woman who testified that Brand demanded a massage and pressed his face into her groin during the recording of an advertisement in 2009.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said the conviction proved the extraordinary courage of the women who came forward.
"Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women," Furphy said. "As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement."
Renewed Entertainment Industry Scrutiny
The criminal case followed a 2023 investigation by The Times and Channel 4 that aired accusations from women detailing sexual abuse and degradation. RNZ reported that the trial has renewed scrutiny of Britain’s entertainment industry and its historical culture of silence, with some victims stating they feared reporting misconduct at the time would damage their careers.
Following the verdicts, police confirmed they have provided prosecutors with an investigation into additional rape allegations against Brand.
