ContainerCo has been granted resource consents for its proposed logistics hub in Te Hakao, despite a notable majority of public submissions opposing the growth. The company plans to establish community and mana whenua liaison groups as part of the project.

The land designated for the logistics hub holds cultural significance for the Pirirakau hapū, who historically occupied Pukewhanake Pā at the headland of the Te Hakao valley. The wetland in the area was once a vital food source for the hapū.

The resource consent process involved public submissions in 2023, during which 273 submissions were received. Of these, 271 were opposed to the development, one was neutral, and one did not clearly state a position. Hearings were held in July 2024, where 17 submitters presented their views to an independent commission comprising Fraser Campbell, James Whetu, and chair Rob van Voorthuysen.

Construction is slated to commence in October, beginning with landscaping and supporting infrastructure, alongside wetland restoration efforts. The development will be undertaken in two stages: an initial 5.24-hectare area will be developed first, followed by a future 2.21-hectare expansion.
