Rugby clinics launch for adolescents in La Araucanía residences

September 29, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Rugby clinics launched across protection residences in La Araucanía, Chile, offering adolescents their first direct experience with the sport as a tool for inclusion, active living, and community connection. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Servicio de Protección Especializada a la Niñez y Adolescencia and the Club de Rugby Rucamanque de Temuco.

Launching Rugby in La Araucanía Protection Residences

Adolescents living in state-protected residences in the La Araucanía region are participating in a structured series of rugby clinics designed to introduce foundational movements, group dynamics, and practical sports activities. The sessions aim to create new recreational opportunities while bridging the gap between residential care facilities and community-based sports organizations. According to the regional announcements, the program uses the physical and social framework of rugby to encourage youth development and personal expression.

Regional authorities and club representatives have mobilized to support the rollout. Paulina Fernández, the regional ministerial secretary of social development and family, attended the opening sessions. She noted that the sport serves as a valuable protective and inclusive instrument. Jaime Millar, director of the Servicio de Protección Especializada a la Niñez y Adolescencia, emphasized that the agency welcomes civil society organizations into residential spaces to enrich the daily lives of participating youth.

Community Integration and Club Involvement

The program relies on active participation from local athletic groups to foster a supportive environment outside the institutional setting. Marcelo Figueroa, president of the Club de Rugby Rucamanque de Temuco, highlighted the positive social impact of introducing youth to the club’s environment. By sharing the sport’s values and team-oriented culture, organizers intend to provide constructive outlets and durable community ties for adolescents under state protection.

The scheduled clinics will continue under the direction of Club Rucamanque, ensuring that more residents across the region gain access to structured athletic training and broader social networks.
