Ruben Van Gucht Faces Backlash Over DJ Career, Veteran DJ Peter Hoogland Defends move
Flemish television personality Ruben Van Gucht is facing criticism after announcing he’s pursuing a career as a DJ, with some in the professional DJ community accusing him of leveraging his celebrity status for opportunities others have worked years to achieve. The controversy has sparked a debate about access to the DJ scene and the perception of “famous faces” entering new professions.
van Gucht, known for his work with VRT, revealed he’d been practicing DJing for months and is now available for bookings. This declaration quickly drew negative reactions on social media, with many arguing that well-known personalities receive preferential treatment. Critics contend that Van Gucht’s platform gives him an unfair advantage over aspiring DJs who are building their careers from the ground up.
The discussion took an unexpected turn when prominent Belgian DJ Peter Hoogland, famed for “het Land van Hoogland,” publicly defended Van Gucht in a Facebook post. Hoogland argued that becoming a DJ is a choice available to anyone, nonetheless of their profession, and requires dedication and skill.
“Becoming a DJ is not a birthright, but a choice,” Hoogland wrote, dismissing the criticism leveled at Van Gucht. He further suggested the backlash stems from discomfort with Van Gucht venturing beyond the role assigned to him by the Flemish public. “It doesn’t bother them that he runs, but that he dares to do it,” hoogland stated.
Hoogland’s post also addressed the broader issue of societal judgment towards individuals who pursue multiple passions, suggesting the criticism reveals more about the critics than Van gucht himself. He emphasized the risk Van Gucht is taking by putting himself out there in a new discipline and applauded his willingness to face potential failure. Van Gucht has already begun performing, and Hoogland believes simply attempting somthing new deserves respect.
