Breaking: Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will captain teams in a December golf event, excluding LIV golf players, broadcast across NBCUniversal’s networks.
A new team golf event, spearheaded by Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, is set to take place this December. Teh competition will feature two four-man teams composed entirely of PGA Tour players, marking a distinct departure from last year’s event which included athletes from LIV Golf. The event aims to capitalize on the “star power” of its participants and generate excitement among golf fans.
“It’s more we wanted to do something that, I guess, all golf fans could get excited about,” McIlroy stated.
This shift represents a clear move away from the previous year’s “Showdown,” which incorporated LIV golf players. The PGA Tour’s sanction and support have been reinstated with the exclusive inclusion of PGA Tour athletes.
While a title sponsor remains unconfirmed, the broadcast will be aired on Versant’s network suite, encompassing USA Network, Golf Channel, CNBC, and their affiliated channels-indicating a considerable media investment.
The December event builds on the foundation of last year’s “Showdown,” which was also produced by the same network group. Josh Carpenter of Golf Digest first reported the details of the upcoming competition.
This short-format tournament is poised to become a significant event in the golf calendar, showcasing the sport’s top players in a head-to-head format. For McIlroy, the event provides another prospect to demonstrate his continued strong performance throughout the season.
