Roberts posted on social media, adding that she treasures moments with her predecessor whom she called an incomparable and beautiful friend.
Sawyer visited the studio to discuss her interview with Michael Douglas regarding his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, according to reporting from ComingSoon.net. The appearance brought the 80-year-old journalist back to the physical space where she worked alongside Roberts from 1999 until 2009, when Sawyer transitioned to hosting ABC World News.
Shared History Across ABC News Programming
The professional overlap between the two journalists spans years of morning television history. Roberts joined the program in 2002 and stepped into a permanent co-anchor role in 2005, working alongside Sawyer during the final years of Sawyer’s tenure. When Sawyer departed the morning show in 2009, Roberts publicly recognized the influence her colleague had on both staff and viewers.
I’ve had the privilege of working with you seven of the 10 years that you’ve been on this program and such an impact this woman has had on my life, personally and professionally,
Roberts stated during the 2009 broadcast, as noted by Associated News Agency coverage.
In subsequent years, the mutual praise continued outside the studio walls. Sawyer praised Roberts’ journalistic integrity and presence in a 2014 interview with Glamour, remarking that wherever Roberts goes, there is more life in the room, more joy.

Roberts Co-Anchors Good Morning America with Colleagues
Roberts currently co-anchors Good Morning America alongside George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan. While Sawyer’s recent appearance centered on her promotional interview with Douglas, the studio visit offered viewers a rare on-camera acknowledgment of the enduring personal connection formed during their years sharing the famed broadcast couch.
