A South Auckland couple was sentenced in the Manukau District Court on Monday for a determined and premeditated tax evasion scheme totaling $560,843.02 over a period of some eight years, 1News reported. Ruta Ah Ching received nine months of home detention, while Sili Ah Ching received the maximum six months of community detention alongside 160 hours of community work.
Corporate Structures and Continued Trading After Deregistration
The defendants operated two distinct corporate entities that ultimately fell out of regulatory compliance. SHS Property Renovation Ltd was established in October 2015, followed by SHR Property Renovations Ltd in November 2021. Both businesses were eventually struck off the Companies Register after failing to file mandatory company returns—SHS in 2021 and SHR in 2023.
Despite losing their registered status, the pair continued commercial operations under those exact names. Inland Revenue estimates the unregistered entities generated approximately $1.8 million in taxable profit across nine years of continuous trading.
Mechanisms of Obfuscation and Audit Findings
Financial investigators uncovered a deliberate pattern of diverting business receipts to evade detection by tax authorities. A significant share of incoming funds went directly into Ruta Ah Ching’s personal bank account or moved through accounts where she held joint signatory rights.

According to Inland Revenue bank analyses, the few Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns filed following an official audit were partially false. Sentencing Judge Andree Wiltens stated that the financial evasion constituted a sustained and deliberate course of conduct, noting that diverting income through multiple bank accounts created deliberate obfuscation which prevented proper assessment of taxes due.
Judge Wiltens added that attempts by Inland Revenue to clarify the financial situation met with zero cooperation and compliance.
Couple Must Pay $65,000 in Structured Financial Restitution
Beyond their custodial and community sentences, the couple must make structured financial restitution to settle their obligations with tax authorities. The court ordered Ruta and Sili Ah Ching to pay $1,000 every month in reparation over the next five years. These monthly payments will accumulate to a total of $65,000 toward the overall deficit.
