Actor Tackles Othello Role, Skirts “Blackface” Debate
Igor Orozovič seeks new dimensions in Shakespearean character.
As he prepares for the titular role in Shakespeare’s *Othello*, actor Igor Orozovič is steering clear of what he calls today’s captivity of cultural wars
surrounding “blackface,” seeking to explore other facets of the character’s otherness.
Beyond Skin Deep
Orozovič, a prominent figure at Prague’s National Theater, emphasizes that his portrayal will not involve painting his face black. Instead, he aims to highlight Othello’s distinctiveness through costume, tattoos, and demeanor, contrasting him with the spoiled
Venetians. He will embody a man of action, gasoline, commander
.
According to data published by Statista, in 2023, 78% of theater attendees agreed that stage productions should reflect contemporary social issues through diverse casting and narratives (Statista 2023).
From *Mephisto* to *Othello*
Drawing parallels with his role in *Mephisto*, where he played an actor whose unhealthy ambition
led to his downfall, Orozovič notes that while Hofgen’s demise was self-inflicted, Othello is a victim of manipulation. He appreciates the opportunity to delve into the complexities of a character experiencing a gradual fall from grace.
Ambition: A Double-Edged Sword?
Orozovič acknowledges the presence of some healthy ambition
within himself, clarifying that he avoids both overestimation and underestimation. He expresses gratitude for engaging roles and values both significant and minor parts in various productions.
Mentoring the Next Generation
In addition to his stage work, Orozovič is now teaching acting at DAMU (the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague), guiding fourteen students alongside Petra Špalková and Tereza Dočkalová. He wants to instill in his students a love for theater, passion for creation
, while also preparing them for the profession’s challenges.
“I do not overestimate as an actor or do not underestimate. I will not catch up after the award and great occasions.”
—Igor Orozovič
Finding Balance
Reflecting on a past experience with panic attacks, Orozovič emphasizes the importance of mental well-being and maintaining psychic hygiene.
He finds relaxation in spending time with his daughter **Violka**, enjoying the outdoors, reading, playing *Magic: The Gathering*, and indulging in romantic comedies.

Ostrava Roots
Orozovič, who hails from Ostrava, acknowledges the city’s unique character and his sense of owing something to it. He contrasts his life now with his upbringing in the mining town, where the truth is rolling down the street like demants and dreams no longer climb to the sky.
A Glance Back
Looking back on past roles, he fondly recalls his experiences in *Golden Swan* and *Landscape in the Shade*. While acknowledging the challenges of his profession, he remains grounded and committed to his craft, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue and understanding in a polarized world.
