River & Chelsea: Acuerdo por jóvenes talentos y prioridad de compra | TyC Sports

March 20, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

River Plate has secured Chelsea midfielder Kendry Páez on a loan deal, a move that signals a deepening strategic partnership between the two clubs, according to sources within both organizations. The 19-year-old Ecuadorian international arrived in Buenos Aires after his loan spell with Racing de Strasbourg was cut short.

The agreement extends beyond a single player transfer, with both River Plate and Chelsea negotiating a long-term collaboration focused on the exchange of young talent. River Plate will become a priority destination for Chelsea players seeking playing time, even as promising prospects from River’s youth academy will be given a pathway to potentially join Chelsea. Chelsea will also have first refusal on any offers for River Plate players, and the possibility exists for players to be loaned to Racing de Strasbourg, which shares the same ownership group as Chelsea.

This arrangement builds on the existing connection between the clubs, highlighted by Enzo Fernández, who began his professional career at River Plate before a high-profile transfer to Benfica and then to Chelsea. Páez’s arrival is seen as the initial step in formalizing a relationship that could provide both clubs with significant sporting and economic benefits.

River Plate officials envision the partnership as a means of providing competitive experience for their developing players, with the rigor of European football – and potentially the exposure of playing for Chelsea – as a key draw. The demanding schedule of the Copa Libertadores, in particular, is viewed as a valuable proving ground for players who may not be receiving consistent minutes in Chelsea’s first team.

While the focus will likely be on South American players moving between the clubs, officials have indicated that the agreement is not geographically limited. The structure aims to streamline negotiations and create a more fluid transfer pathway for young players identified by both clubs’ scouting networks.

Prior to Páez and Fernández, several Argentinian players have transitioned from River Plate to European clubs, including Hernán Crespo, Radamel Falcao, and Gonzalo Higuaín, though their paths did not involve a formal partnership like the one currently being established. Páez is currently integrating into the River Plate squad under manager Eduardo Coudet.
