Cēsis Football Legend Džeina Eglīte Retires After Historic Season with Riga FC Women
RIGA, Latvia – Džeina Eglīte, a standout player from Cēsis, concluded her career with Riga FC Women on Sunday, departing the pitch to a guard of honor in the final game of the Latvian women’s league against RFS Women. The match marked the end of a remarkable season where riga FC Women secured a historic quadruple – winning the Latvian Champions Cup, Latvian Cup, Latvian Super Cup, and Baltic cup – all without a single defeat.
Eglīte, who started the game and was substituted in the 53rd minute, was visibly moved by the farewell. “That’s why it’s hard to part,” she told LTV Sport news, adding that her teammates affectionately call her “the team’s mom,” making the departure especially emotional.Throughout the Latvian championship, Eglīte appeared in 18 of 24 games, contributing to her team’s undefeated run and championship title secured several rounds prior to the season’s end.
This unprecedented achievement represents a new milestone for Cēsis football, as Eglīte is the frist woman from the region to win all four trophies in a single season. Her decision to retire comes as a deliberate choice,allowing her to dedicate more time to her family and her role as a coach with the “Cēsis” football club. Eglīte also expressed her ambition to rebuild a women’s team in Cēsis capable of competing in the Latvian championship, as previously shared with Druva.
