Hughes Previously Lined Up Jackson For Bournemouth Deal

Liverpool sporting director’s prior transfer pursuit revealed

Liverpool’s current pursuit of attacking reinforcements has brought to light past dealings, specifically a £20.3m agreement that then-Bournemouth sporting director Richard Hughes reached for striker Nicolas Jackson.

Past Transfer Saga Uncovered

As Liverpool scouts options like Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, a fascinating detail has emerged regarding Richard Hughes‘ previous transfer activity. While at AFC Bournemouth, Hughes had successfully negotiated a deal to sign the Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson.

Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, was previously involved in a significant transfer negotiation for Nicolas Jackson.

The initial agreement, reported in January 2023, was for £20.3 million when Jackson was playing for Villarreal. The transfer appeared imminent, with Jackson even filmed en route to the UK to finalize the move.

However, the transfer was ultimately scuppered after Nicolas Jackson failed a medical examination due to a hamstring injury. Bournemouth, facing a relegation battle at the time, decided against waiting for his recovery, given the expected extended layoff.

Jackson’s Resurgence and Chelsea Move

Following his return to fitness in March, Jackson concluded his Villarreal spell with an impressive tally of 10 goals in his final 11 appearances. This stellar form attracted significant attention, culminating in a £32 million transfer to Chelsea in June 2023.

Reflecting on the collapsed move to Bournemouth, Jackson had stated, “I’m happy now. I was injured, but now I’m playing and enjoying it. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m happy to be able to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Bournemouth’s owner, Bill Foley, later conceded that the club had erred in not securing Jackson’s signature, admitting, “We tried to get him back this year, we had him last year and I believe we made a mistake. He didn’t pass his medical but actually he played much sooner than we thought he would.”

Current Transfer Landscape

Now 24, Nicolas Jackson has recorded 30 goals in 81 matches for Chelsea, contributing to their triumphs in the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League. Despite his achievements, his tenure at Stamford Bridge has seen periods of criticism, including disciplinary issues and questions over his finishing.

The recent arrivals of Pedro and Liam Delap at Chelsea have cast doubt on Jackson‘s long-term future with the London club, potentially opening an avenue for a transfer should he become available.

While Hughes‘ past interest is notable, it does not automatically indicate a renewed pursuit for Jackson at Liverpool. The Reds’ current transfer strategy remains focused on identifying new centre-forward targets to strengthen their squad.
