Rhode Island Ice Rink Shooting: Ex-Wife & Son Killed, Suspect Dead
A shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on Monday, February 16, 2026, left two people dead and three critically injured, according to police. The suspect, identified as Robert Dorgan, born in 1969, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities stated the shooting appeared to be “targeted” and stemmed from a family dispute. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves told reporters that Dorgan also used the name Roberta and the last name Esposito. The victims have been identified as Dorgan’s ex-wife and one of his sons, according to authorities.
The shooting occurred during a youth hockey game, with several schools participating in a senior night event. A witness intervened during the incident, potentially preventing further casualties, Goncalves said. “A Good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in this scene, and that’s probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event,” she stated.
Three individuals remain hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Federal agents from the ATF and FBI responded to the scene to assist state and local law enforcement.
News of the shooting prompted reactions from professional sports teams in nearby Boston. The Boston Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, and New England Patriots all released statements expressing sympathy for those affected by the violence.
The Dennis M. Lynch Arena remains taped off as police continue their investigation. No further details regarding the motive or the sequence of events have been released by authorities.
