RFK Jr. Visit: Texas Farm Fresh Initiative & School Nutrition Update (2026)

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

AUSTIN – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller highlighted the state’s Farm Fresh Initiative and anticipated changes to school nutrition standards ahead of a visit from U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. On Thursday.

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, the Farm to School program now reaches 79% of schools across the state, a significant increase attributed to a decade of focus under Commissioner Miller. The initiative aims to replace processed foods with locally sourced options, supporting both student health and Texas agricultural producers.

“I’m proud of what the Texas Department of Agriculture has delivered to our kids over the past decade: swapping trash-bound junk for farm-fresh fuel that powers our kids, strengthens our farmers, and rebuilds our communities,” Miller stated. He further emphasized the potential for improvement with the forthcoming Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are being updated under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership.

Miller expressed a desire to accelerate the shift towards healthier school meals, advocating for the removal of over-processed foods and an increased emphasis on nutrient-dense options from Texas farms. He framed this as an investment in both the health of the next generation and the state’s agricultural economy.

The push for updated dietary guidelines and increased focus on local food sourcing aligns with Secretary Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement, according to previous statements. A growing number of states are considering limiting or banning fluoride in public water systems as part of this movement, a proposal that could impact dental health standards established over the past 80 years.

Commissioner Miller’s advocacy for the Farm Fresh Initiative comes as he seeks re-election. He is currently facing a challenge from Nate Sheets in the Republican primary for Texas Agriculture Commissioner, with the winner set to face Clayton in the general election, according to reporting from Community Impact.

In a November 2024 opinion piece, Miller publicly endorsed Kennedy, aligning himself with the MAGA movement and praising Kennedy’s voice in support of its goals.
