China to Ban Retractable Door Handles, Citing Safety Concerns

Beijing, China – september 7, 2025 – In a move poised to reshape automotive design, Chinese regulators are preparing to prohibit the use of retractable door handles on new vehicle models, effective promptly. the decision, announced today by the Ministry of Industry and Facts Technology (MIIT), stems from growing safety concerns surrounding the handles’ potential to impede emergency egress.

The ban impacts both domestic automakers and foreign manufacturers selling vehicles within China, the world’s largest automotive market. While designed to improve aerodynamics and aesthetics, retractable handles have faced increasing scrutiny following reports of malfunctions and difficulties accessing vehicles in emergency situations. The MIIT stated that the design poses a risk to passenger safety, particularly in accidents or when rapid evacuation is necessary. Automakers will be required to redesign vehicles currently utilizing the feature, and future models must adhere to the new standard, prioritizing readily accessible, traditional door handles. This regulation underscores a broader trend of prioritizing safety and user experience in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
