Joniškis, Lithuania – A recent visit to Joniškis reveals a quiet town grappling with economic realities, where retirees are a common sight and job prospects, especially for younger generations, are increasingly scarce. Delfi reporters found a community valuing its peaceful lifestyle, but one acutely aware of the limitations facing its workforce.
During a midday stroll through the town center in August, reporters primarily encountered retirees.Virginia, a resident, succinctly summarized the financial strain felt by manny: “I’m no longer working, I’m a retiree, but on the material point of view, we just have to moan.”
The lack of employment opportunities is a recurring theme amongst those still seeking work.One woman, recently declared unfit for her previous role, expressed frustration at the difficulty of finding a new position. “I want to change the area to be out of trade because I have worked in the trade for many years, since graduation. Lack of work. I have already been looked at,” she stated.
