new CEO Appointed to Drive Irish Research & Innovation Agenda
Dublin, Ireland – Diarmuid O’Brien today begins his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Research Ireland, taking the helm of the organization pivotal to sustaining and developing Ireland’s world-class research and innovation ecosystem. O’Brien expressed his enthusiasm for returning to Ireland and joining what he considers a vital national institution.Research Ireland plays a critical role in supporting research across all disciplines and fostering collaboration between universities, industry, government agencies, and international partners. The appointment comes at a time when ireland’s research and innovation capabilities are increasingly important on the global stage.O’Brien stated his commitment to working closely with Minister James Lawless and the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, alongside other relevant Government Departments. He also emphasized the importance of strong partnerships with key agencies including IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, the Higher Education Authority, and the Health Research Board (HRB).
Furthermore, O’Brien highlighted plans to collaborate with national and international research funders such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), UK Research and innovation, and The royal Society, to further advance Ireland’s research and innovation ambitions. He looks forward to meeting researchers across the island, both in academia and industry, and working with the dedicated Research Ireland team and Board.
