Reports: Putin ordered sabotage and hits in Europe to weaken Ukraine

Reports: Putin ordered sabotage and hits in Europe to weaken Ukraine

October 21, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Vladimir Putin ordered a wave of clandestine sabotage operations and targeted assassinations across NATO member states to weaken European support for Ukraine, according to intelligence investigations published by the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times.

The Leipzig Airport Drone Attack in August

The campaign crossed into direct action on the night of August 4 to 5, 2026, when an explosive-laden drone struck an Antonov cargo plane parked at Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany. The device hit an aircraft wing near the fuel tanks before falling to the ground. Investigators from the Wall Street Journal and Spiegel reported that the ignition system failed, preventing a catastrophic blast.

Kremlin Orders Attacks on Drone and Communications Executives

Five European intelligence services told the Financial Times in an October 11, 2026 report that the Kremlin ordered attempts on the lives of executives running small and mid-sized companies producing drones and military communications gear for Ukraine. Sinan Selen, president of Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, warned lawmakers that state-backed actors are planning direct acts of violence utilizing organized crime networks.

“The Russia intelligence services are planning deliberately acts of violence against individuals, led by state actors or state-controlled actors,” Selen told German parliamentarians. “We are observing an evolution of these actions regarding targets, methods, and actors involved, including the use of organized crime structures.”

For small-scale defense manufacturers, the cost of round-the-clock physical security presents a severe financial burden. Some firms have responded by relocating production sites entirely within Western Europe. In Sweden, police arrested a Russian couple on August 6, 2026, after they set up a tent near a chalet used by Micael Johansson, the CEO of defense contractor Saab, according to reports covered by Ukrainska Pravda.

Preceding Logistical Sabotage Incidents

The 2026 attacks build on a pattern of hybrid warfare initiated months prior. In July 2024, incendiary parcels ignited inside logistics hubs in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland. Western investigators linked those initial fires to tests for future disruptions of international air freight. Additional sabotage attempts have targeted maritime shipping in the Black Sea and manufacturing plants tied to military hardware.

The psychological pressure of constant surveillance and targeted threats aims to make executives and civilian contractors reconsider doing business with Kyiv. Kremlin officials have rejected the allegations, with Vladimir Putin demanding proof regarding the claims of state-directed sabotage.
