Reeves Plains Fire: Smoke Warning – Lewiston, Two Wells & Gawler Area | Feb 2026

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Residents in Reeves Plains, Lewiston, and Two Wells, in South Australia’s Adelaide Plains, have been advised to avoid smoke originating from the Reeves Plains fire as of 8:24 PM local time on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) issued the advice, stating that smoke is currently impacting the Lewiston township, Reeves Plains, and the Two Wells area, approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Gawler. The CFS warns that smoke can negatively affect health, urging residents to stay informed about potential health impacts.

Exposure to smoke can cause a range of symptoms, including shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, burning eyes, a runny nose, chest tightness, chest pain, and dizziness or light-headedness. The CFS advises individuals experiencing difficulty breathing to seek medical attention from their local general practitioner. Severe symptoms warrant a call to 000 for emergency assistance.

The CFS recommends several measures to mitigate smoke exposure. Residents are advised to remain indoors as much as possible, closing windows, doors, and air vents. Appropriate air conditioner settings should be used in homes and vehicles to prevent outside air from entering. Spending time in air-conditioned public venues, such as cinemas, shopping centers, and libraries, is likewise recommended. Reducing indoor air pollution by avoiding smoking, gas cooking, candle burning, and vacuum cleaning is encouraged.

The CFS also advises against vigorous outdoor activity, particularly for individuals with asthma or other chronic lung or heart conditions. The advice message is scheduled to be updated as the situation evolves, with the next update expected on March 1, 2026, at 9:00 AM local time.

Approximately 35 CFS firefighters are currently working to contain a grassfire at Lewiston, roughly 8 kilometers east of Two Wells, supported by South Australia Police.

The incident comes after South Australia Police investigated a series of eight deliberately lit fires across the Adelaide Plains on February 25, 2023, including in Two Wells, Dublin, Lower Light, Korunye, and Reeves Plains. Police at the time were seeking information regarding a white dual-cab ute with a black tray and black rims believed to be connected to those fires.
