Reddit Stock Tanks As Google Search Traffic Declines
Reddit Earnings Beat Expectations While Search Traffic Declines
Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895m, a 53% increase year-over-year that beat the consensus of $875m, according to financial figures. The company posted a 45% margin, driving adj EBITDA to $402m—up 70% from the previous year—while free cash flow almost doubled to $363m.
Despite the strong financial metrics, Reddit stock tanked 30%. The market reaction followed a disclosure in the earnings report that search referral traffic from Google declined materially during the third quarter, dropping by more than one million referrals per week.
Google AI Search Products Drive Referral Traffic Drop
CEO Steve Huffman identified Google as the primary driver behind the traffic loss. According to Huffman, Google’s AI products now consume Reddit content directly, synthesize answers, and satisfy user queries without directing traffic to the platform. Huffman stated that Google has shifted its relationship with the rest of the internet.
The shift highlights what the reporting characterizes as AI extraction economics. Reddit maintains a corpus of 27 billion posts and comments reflecting first-person human experiences, nuance, and community context that AI models struggle to manufacture. Data shows that 50% of U.S. shoppers use Reddit to verify AI recommendations, making human-generated content scarcer and more valuable as synthetic data proliferates.

Publishers Confront the End of Free Search Referral Traffic
The traffic decline poses a challenge for businesses whose acquisition models rely on free search referral traffic, including Pinterest, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Quora, recipe sites, product reviews, travel sites, news publishers, and comparison platforms. As AI consumption replaces referral traffic, content owners face the necessity of replacing implicit distribution bargains with explicit licensing agreements, authenticated APIs, restricted access, and usage-based pricing models.
Reddit is already moving toward this model by planning to push more content behind a logged-in wall and driving users toward its dedicated application. Logged-in and app users currently generate over 80% of company revenue. If other digital publishers follow this strategy, the open web faces a structural transition away from open crawling and referral monetization toward restricted access and direct user relationship management.

Not for us, and not to anybody.” Search referrals fell by over 1m a week in October, and Reddit is moving everyone to logged-in, partly to keep scrapers out of its 27B-post corpus.
