More then a year after the fall of the Assad regime, Syria faces the monumental task of rebuilding a health system decimated by over a decade of conflict and systemic targeting.The infrastructure is gutted, public trust is eroded, and the system is burdened by the weight of crippling sanctions.
Years of purposeful attacks on hospitals and healthcare workers, coupled wiht severe restrictions on medical supplies and obstruction of humanitarian aid, have left the Syrian health sector in a state of collapse. A recent report by the World health Organization (WHO) highlights the dire situation, noting that over 70% of healthcare workers have either been killed or forced to flee the country.Estimates suggest nearly 15,000 physicians have left Syria during the war, leaving some areas with a ratio of only one physician per 10,000 residents.
The consequences of this exodus are devastating.Access to essential medical care is severely limited, particularly in areas previously under opposition control. Chronic diseases are going untreated, maternal and child mortality rates are rising, and the risk of outbreaks of preventable diseases is increasing. Rebuilding the Syrian health system requires a multifaceted approach.
