Real Madrid has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a supporter after footage emerged of an alleged Nazi salute performed before Wednesday’s Champions League match against Benfica at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. The incident occurred as television cameras surveyed the crowd prior to kickoff.
The club confirmed that security staff identified and immediately ejected the individual from the stadium. A statement released by Real Madrid declared the club is seeking the “immediate expulsion” of the member. “Real Madrid condemns this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society,” the statement read.
The match itself saw Real Madrid secure a 2-1 victory, advancing to the Champions League last 16 with an aggregate score of 3-1. Aurélien Tchouaméni, Real Madrid’s midfielder, stated the win was a victory “for everyone who is against racism,” referencing ongoing concerns surrounding racial abuse directed at teammate Vinicius Junior.
This incident follows a recent investigation by UEFA into allegations of racial abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior during the first leg of the play-off tie against Benfica. Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni was provisionally suspended by UEFA pending the outcome of the investigation, a suspension that was upheld after an appeal by the Portuguese club.
Whereas a Nazi salute is considered a criminal offense in some European countries, including Germany and Italy, it is not currently a criminal offense in Spain unless accompanied by other acts constituting a hate crime. However, Real Madrid has taken swift action to address the incident internally.
The club’s response comes amid heightened awareness of racism and extremist gestures in football. A large banner reading “no to racism” was displayed by Real Madrid fans during the pre-match lineup.
Real Madrid’s disciplinary committee will now review the case and determine the appropriate course of action, potentially resulting in a lifetime ban from attending matches at the Santiago Bernabéu.
