Ratatan Nintendo Switch Version Officially Canceled: Here’s Why

April 4, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Evil Empire has officially confirmed the cancellation of the planned Nintendo Switch version of Ratatan, removing the hybrid console from the title’s launch platform list. The decision marks a significant shift in the distribution strategy for the upcoming four-versus-four melee brawler, prioritizing performance fidelity over broader hardware accessibility during the initial release window.

The Montreal-based studio, known for the critically acclaimed metroidvania The Messenger, cited technical constraints as the primary driver for the cancellation. In a statement addressing the community, the developers explained that the specific physics-based combat mechanics central to Ratatan‘s design could not be realized on the Nintendo Switch hardware without compromising the core gameplay experience. The studio emphasized that porting the game to the aging system would require downgrades that conflict with their quality standards for the title’s competitive integrity.

Ratatan distinguishes itself in the fighting game genre by focusing entirely on melee combat, removing projectiles and ranged attacks to emphasize positioning and timing. This design choice relies heavily on consistent frame rates and precise hitbox registration, factors that are often hard to maintain on the Switch’s mobile-oriented architecture when paired with modern graphical engines. By narrowing the launch scope, Evil Empire aims to ensure that the netcode and physics interactions remain stable across the supported platforms.

The game is currently scheduled to proceed with an early access launch on PC via Steam. This phased rollout allows the development team to iterate on balance and server stability based on player feedback before committing to a wider console release. While the Switch version has been scrapped for the current cycle, the studio has not explicitly ruled out the possibility of a port for future hardware iterations, though no development resources are currently allocated to such a project.

Industry analysts note that this move aligns with a growing trend among mid-sized independent studios facing the technical disparity between the 2017-era Switch hardware and the demands of modern Unreal Engine titles. As the industry approaches the potential unveiling of a successor console from Nintendo, developers are increasingly hesitant to invest in optimizing complex physics games for the current generation.

Evil Empire has directed interested players to follow their official channels for updates regarding the PC early access date. For now, the studio’s focus remains strictly on finalizing the build for Windows, leaving the console landscape for Ratatan undefined beyond the confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions which remain in development alongside the PC release.
