Bad Weather May Hinder Partial Lunar Eclipse Viewing in Magallanes

August 27, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The southern Chilean region of Magallanes faces adverse weather conditions that threaten visibility for tonight’s partial lunar eclipse, according to reporting from El Pingüino.

Skywatchers across Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, and other localities throughout the Región de Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena are preparing for the celestial event during the night of Thursday, August 27, and the early hours of Friday, August 28, as reported by Patagonia al Día. However, cloud cover and meteorological instability in the far south could obstruct the view of the lunar surface.

Timelines and Regional Scheduling

Because the Magallanes region operates on an official time zone distinct from the rest of Chile, all phases of the eclipse will occur one hour later than the national reference schedule, according to Patagonia al Día. The event begins at 22:21 local time on Thursday, August 27, when the Moon enters the Earth’s penumbra. The terrestrial shadow will become increasingly apparent on the lunar disk by 23:15.

The darker umbral phase starts at 23:33, leading up to the maximum eclipse at 01:12 on Friday, August 28, when the Earth’s shadow covers the maximum portion of the lunar surface. During this peak period, the Moon may take on a reddish hue. The umbral phase concludes around 02:52, and the entire event ends at 04:03 as the Moon exits the penumbra.

Observation Safety and Equipment

Unlike solar eclipses, observing a lunar eclipse poses no threat to human eyesight, allowing viewers to watch the progression safely with the naked eye, as noted by Patagonia al Día. Binoculars and telescopes can provide closer detail of the shadow advancing across the lunar disc, provided local weather breaks long enough for observation.
