Putin Warns Pacific Threat as Russia Installs Anti-Drone Nets on Submarines
Russia has expanded its use of anti-drone nets to protect more than half a dozen submarines at the Rybachiy Nuclear Submarine Base on the Kamchatka Peninsula, according to satellite imagery collected by the US spatial intelligence firm Vantor and reported by Business Insider. The imagery, captured on Tuesday, shows a significant increase from May, when satellite photos showed only two submarines covered with netting at the strategic facility.
Pacific Fleet Hub Receives Expanded Defenses
The Rybachiy base serves as the central hub for the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet, hosting both nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarines and attack submarines. While the location sits more than 4,500 miles east of Ukraine, the deployment of protective netting mirrors countermeasures Russia has utilized closer to the active conflict zones in the Black Sea, according to Business Insider’s analysis. The defense ministry in Moscow and the Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the added Pacific fortifications.
Long-Range Drone Threats Prompt Naval Hardening
The hardening of distant naval assets follows a pattern of Ukrainian strikes reaching deep inside Russian territory, utilizing drones that can travel over 1,000 miles. Beyond standard cross-border attacks, Kyiv has previously demonstrated the capacity to launch remote strikes from within Russia itself, including operations targeting air bases in the Arctic, Siberia, and near the Chinese border, as noted by Business Insider. In southwestern Russia, satellite imagery from June revealed that at least three submarines at the Novorossiysk naval base—homeport to the Black Sea Fleet—have been equipped with counter-drone cages designed to shield their conning towers.
Intelligence Assessments and Operational Shifts
Britain’s defense ministry stated in an intelligence update that these counter-drone cages were applied as a preventive measure in response to Ukraine’s growing capability to strike targets far beyond the immediate front lines. Ukrainian forces have previously used explosive sea drones to attack Novorossiysk, prompting Moscow to deploy large physical barriers in the water alongside the newly introduced cage armor. Originally popularized as makeshift protection for tanks and armored vehicles against shrapnel and aerial drones, cage armor and netting have steadily proliferated across Russian military logistics, energy infrastructure, and now strategic submarine fleets.
Neither the Russian defense ministry nor US diplomatic representatives have issued formal statements addressing the satellite findings or the broader security implications for the Pacific Fleet.
