Pumas Defeat América in Dramatic Clásico Capitalino with Late Penalty
A late penalty converted by Paraguayan forward Robert Morales secured a dramatic victory for Pumas UNAM over Club América in the Clásico Capitalino on Sunday. The match, played at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, ended 1-0 in favor of Pumas after Morales scored in the fifth minute of added time.
The first half saw a high-intensity start, though both teams struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances. América controlled the ball for extended periods but failed to capitalize on the pace of Brian Rodríguez and Alejandro Zendejas. Pumas responded with an aggressive style, creating opportunities through Memo Martínez and Juninho, but their shots lacked precision in the final moments.
A concerning incident occurred in the 38th minute when América’s Cristian Borja delivered a hard tackle on Pumas’ Alan Medina, halting play while medical staff attended to the Mexican midfielder. Fortunately for Pumas, Medina was able to continue after receiving treatment.
The second half mirrored the first, with both sides attempting to create attacking opportunities. Yet, a lack of accuracy and congested midfield play hampered their efforts. In the 78th minute, Morales attempted to exploit a counter-attack, but his shot was comfortably saved by América goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time when Pumas’ Guillermo Martínez was brought down in the penalty area. Initially, the referee did not award a penalty, but after a review using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the decision was overturned, and a penalty was awarded to Pumas. Morales stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick, sending Cota the wrong way.
With the win, Pumas temporarily climb to fourth place in the Liga MX general table with 23 points. América, meanwhile, drops to eighth place with 17 points.
