Massive Swell Kicks Off Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang, Bali
PADANG PADANG, BALI, INDONESIA – August 19, 2024 – The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang, a prestigious event on the World Surf League (WSL) championship Tour (CT), has commenced amidst a historic swell delivering waves up too 15 feet. The event, held at the world-renowned left-hand reef break of Padang Padang on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, saw competitors tackling challenging conditions over the weekend of August 17-18 before the swell began to subside.
Initial days of competition were marked by exceptionally large waves, pushing the limits of even the most seasoned surfers. While the swell is now forecasted to decrease to more manageable,paddle-powered waves for the official CT competition window,the opening days provided a spectacular display of big-wave surfing.WSL officials confirmed that the swell, originating from a powerful Southern Ocean storm, was one of the largest seen at Padang Padang in recent memory.
Photographers and videographers, including those positioned in the channel and aboard numerous boats, captured extensive footage of the action. The WSL anticipates releasing a wealth of premium content showcasing the performances of surfers like jack Robinson, Griffin Colapinto, and Carissa Moore (competing in the women’s event, added to the CT in 2024). The event is utilizing a new judging system focusing on commitment and wave selection in these extreme conditions.
The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang is a unique event,relying on a 6-day waiting period for the optimal swell conditions. This year’s event window runs from August 19th to August 25th. The competition format includes a non-elimination round of 36 surfers, followed by elimination rounds leading to a final showdown for the title.
The event’s location, Padang Padang, is known for its incredibly fast, hollow left-hand barrels, making it a favorite among surfers seeking a challenging and rewarding wave. The local community benefits from the event thru tourism and economic activity, with over 5,000 spectators expected to attend throughout the waiting period.
