PSX Drops Below 165000 Amid Political Turmoil And Ongoing Oil Shock

PSX Drops Below 165000 Amid Political Turmoil And Ongoing Oil Shock

October 14, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Nervous equity investors offloaded positions at the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Tuesday, driving the benchmark KSE-100 index below the key resistance level of 165,000 amid political turmoil and an ongoing oil shock.

Pakistan Stock Exchange Falls on Governor's Rule

The Pakistan Stock Exchange extended overnight losses during Tuesday’s trading session as market participants reacted to governor’s rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to data provided by Topline Securities Ltd, the index fell 347.97 points, or 0.21 per cent, to close at 164,776.44. Trading remained range-bound throughout the session, weighed down by persistent selling pressure on index-heavy stocks.

Major laggards included Pakistan Telecommunication Company, United Bank, Habib Bank, Lucky Cement, and Mari Energies. Together, these five equities wiped out 343 points from the benchmark, dragging overall market performance lower.

Profit Taking Pushes Benchmark into Negative Territory

Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd, noted that the trading session was defined by high volatility. The market opened higher following the previous day’s sell-off and climbed to an intraday high of 166,071. However, profit-taking at those higher levels curtailed the recovery and pushed the benchmark back into negative territory by the closing bell.

Despite the drop in index value, investor participation picked up slightly. Trading volume rose 5.72 per cent to reach 384 million shares, while the total traded value dipped 9.67 per cent to Rs13.1 billion.

Sector Performance and Economic Outlook

These market movements occurred despite optimism from the finance minister, who projected that gross domestic product growth would exceed four per cent this fiscal year despite pressures from the oil shock. Market analysts suggest that near-term direction will depend on institutional activity, key economic indicators, and political developments, advising a prudent approach focused on fundamentally sound stocks until sentiment stabilizes.
