Massive Cannabis Grow Busted Near Strabane
Police in Northern Ireland have taken down a large-scale cannabis operation thought to be among the biggest in the North West in recent years. The seizure occurred during a planned search in the Strabane area.
£1.4 Million Street Value
During the operation, authorities seized suspected cannabis plants estimated to be worth £1.4 million on the street. Law enforcement also confiscated paraphernalia related to drug cultivation and supply as the searches continued.
The Organised Crime Branch led the operation earlier today, investigating potential drug crimes connected to the INLA. Officers from Derry City and Strabane, the Tactical Support Group, police dog handlers, and police dogs assisted.
Two Arrests Made
As a result of the operation, two individuals were arrested and are currently in custody. According to the PSNI, inquiries remain active and ongoing.
Police Statements
According to “We have dismantled a large, sophisticated suspected cannabis operation with row after row of suspected cannabis plants that filled two floors of the building.”
as said by Detective Inspector Pyper from the Organised Crime Branch.
Derry City & Strabane Area Commander, Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney said, “Drugs cause misery in our communities, we have seen that far too often. We have also seen how large-scale drug operations are linked to organised crime gangs who will do anything to make money with no care for the harm they cause in our communities. This has been a significant operation and reflects the Police Service’s commitment to targeting drugs supply in Northern Ireland.”
Community Impact
Cannabis use has seen a rise in recent years; the National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that approximately 19.4% of adults aged 18-25 used marijuana in the past month (SAMHSA, 2022). Operations like this aim to curb the increasing availability and potential harm in communities.
