Controversial Call: PSG Match Features No Red Card for Violent Tackle, VAR Review Declined
MONACO – A contentious tackle by AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara on Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier during this weekend’s match sparked immediate debate, yet went unpunished with a red card. Referee Clément Turpin issued only a yellow card, a decision made even more surprising by his choice not to review the incident with Video assistant Referee (VAR) officials.
The lack of a red card has ignited controversy amongst fans and pundits alike, raising questions about the threshold for direct expulsion in ligue 1. The incident occurred during PSG’s second defeat this season at the AS Monaco pitch, and the outcome could have significantly altered the match’s dynamic. The decision will now be formally scrutinized by the DTA (Direction Technique de l’Arbitrage) at their weekly technical meeting in Clairefontaine this Monday.
According to RMC Sport, dialog did occur between Turpin and the VAR team – Jérémie Pignard (video assistant) and Gaël Angoula (liaison between the field and VAR). Though, Pignard and Angoula determined the criteria for a direct red card were not fully met and advised Turpin against reviewing the play. Despite the debate,Camara remained on the field, and the initial yellow card decision stands pending the DTA’s review.
