PS6 Power Expectations Downgraded by Analyst Who Initially Fueled RTX 5090 Comparisons
January 26, 2024 - Initial projections of the PlayStation 6’s graphical capabilities, which sparked excitement by drawing comparisons to the high-end RTX 5090 graphics card, are being walked back by the analyst who initially made them. Moore’s Law is Dead, a prominent voice in tech analysis, now asserts the PS6 will fall significantly short of RTX 5090 performance, particularly given its anticipated low Thermal Design power (TDP) of 160W.
The shift in assessment follows the release of videos comparing the PS6’s projected “Orion” APU to Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 5090. Thes comparisons ignited speculation about a substantial leap in console power. However, Moore’s Law is Dead is now clarifying that achieving RTX 5090-level performance is unrealistic. This recalibration impacts gamers and industry observers anticipating the next generation of console gaming, perhaps tempering expectations for visual fidelity and processing power.
According to Moore’s Law is Dead, the PS6 will likely deliver a maximum of three times the rasterization performance of the PlayStation 5. However, the analyst cautions that leaked specifications are often overly optimistic, suggesting a more realistic two-fold increase in rasterization is probable.the outlook is brighter for ray tracing, where the PS6 is projected to offer six to twelve times the performance of its predecessor.
“Apu Orion is in fact much weaker than RTX 5090. It’s about half of the Rasterization capacity RTX 5090,” Moore’s Law is Dead stated. “Without ray tracing PS6 will also lose to RTX 5080.” The analyst now estimates the PS6’s rasterization performance will be roughly equivalent to half that of the RTX 5090 and slightly below the RTX 5080.
