PlayStation Raises Prices on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Portal Amid Global Economic Pressures
Sony Interactive Entertainment will increase the price of the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal Remote Player on April 2nd, 2026, citing ongoing global economic pressures. The price hikes, announced on March 27th, represent a significant shift for the gaming giant as it navigates rising production and logistical costs.
Isabelle Tomatis, Global Marketing Vice President at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated the price adjustments were necessary to ensure the company could continue delivering “innovative and high-quality gaming experiences” to players. The move comes as economies worldwide grapple with inflation and supply chain disruptions.
In the United States, the standard PlayStation 5 will now retail for $649.99, an increase from $549. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will cost $599.99, up from $499. The higher-complete PlayStation 5 Pro will witness the most substantial increase, rising to $899.99 from $749. Sony emphasized that the decision to raise prices was not taken lightly. The company aims to balance manufacturing expenses even as maintaining the performance and features expected by its user base. The price increases are being implemented globally, affecting regions including the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan, reflecting a coordinated strategy to address rising costs.
The price adjustments extend beyond the consoles themselves. Sony acknowledged that accessories, peripherals, and even game prices are also being impacted by the current economic climate. While acknowledging the financial strain on gamers, Sony maintains its commitment to supporting the PlayStation community.
The PlayStation Portal Remote Player, released as a dedicated device for remote play over Wi-Fi, allows users to stream games installed on their PS5 console. According to PlayStation’s official website, the device is capable of delivering gameplay at up to 60fps with 1080p resolution. A recent update in November 2025 added cloud streaming functionality for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, further expanding the Portal’s capabilities.
As of March 29, 2026, Sony has not announced any further price adjustments or changes to its product lineup beyond the announced increases set to take effect on April 2nd.
