Scales and actor Timothy West shared a remarkable partnership for over six decades, marrying in 1963 and remaining devoted until West’s passing in November 2024. West, a highly respected performer in his own right, was renowned for his powerful stage portrayals of characters like King Lear and Falstaff, and also graced television screens in popular series such as Brass, Not Going Out, Bleak House, Coronation Street, and EastEnders.

He is perhaps best known for his role as Siegfried Farnon in the recent adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, but his impressive resume also includes performances in Enron and Rupert’s Land. Beyond acting, West has lent his voice to numerous documentaries and has recorded over 100 audiobooks.
In a poignant reflection on his mother’s battle with dementia in 2023, Samuel West shared a touching anecdote with The Times. He recounted a recent visit where he asked his mother how old she thought he was, to which she playfully responded by asking her own age.He noted that she frequently enough estimates his age to be around 27 – a charming 30-year underestimation.
Samuel West’s early exposure to the world of theater, thanks to his mother taking him backstage during her performances, clearly left a lasting impression. He recalled in a 2011 interview with The Guardian fondly remembering “perching like a bracket on her dressing-room table and watching her in the mirror as she put her makeup on,” and admitted to missing his famous parents “very much” when his work took him away.
