WASHINGTON – protests erupted outside a Washington, D.C. restaurant Tuesday evening as former President Donald Trump made a rare public appearance for a political fundraiser. Demonstrators gathered near the entrance of BLT Steak in the Wharf neighborhood, voicing opposition to Trump’s policies and candidacy.
the incident comes amid a broader debate over the economic challenges facing Washington, D.C. restaurants, which have been grappling with increased costs and fluctuating foot traffic. While restaurant traffic rebounded in recent weeks, including during the extended Summer Restaurant Week, concerns remain about the long-term impact of factors like inflation and federal workforce changes. The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) reports that its members identified inflation, tariffs, federal workforce reductions, and immigration as top concerns in a recent survey, though safety remains a priority.
According to reports, Trump attended a fundraiser hosted by the Conservative Political Action Coalition (CPAC). Video footage circulating on social media showed protesters chanting slogans and holding signs as Trump entered and exited the restaurant.
Shawn Townsend, president and CEO of RAMW, previously told NPR that restaurants were already struggling with rising costs related to labor, rent control, and food. “My folks are just trying to get through the next couple weeks,” he said earlier this month. Townsend stated in a recent statement that August was particularly tough for operators due to summer travel, extreme heat, and a heightened federal presence, leading to reduced sales.
RAMW is optimistic about the fall season, anticipating renewed energy with the return of Congress and college students.Townsend expressed confidence that restaurants “are ready to meet this moment and welcome guests back to experience the vibrancy and hospitality that define dining in the District.”
