Prostate Cancer Exercise Programme Helps Men Regain Strength and Combat Fatigue

Prostate Cancer Exercise Programme Helps Men Regain Strength and Combat Fatigue

October 6, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Prostate Cancer Programme Restores Strength and Energy for Patients

“This cancer activity programme was absolutely fantastic for me and it’s helped me get over my fatigue and get my strength back,” Mike James said of a specialized physical regimen rolling out across healthcare services.

Men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer report that a structured exercise initiative successfully combats fatigue, helps reverse muscle loss, and enhances overall quality of life.

    Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • The free 24-week Cancer Activity Programme (CAP) provides supervised exercise, dietary advice, and behavioral support.
  • The intervention is designed specifically for patients prescribed androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to slow prostate cancer growth.
  • Findings from the Sheffield Hallam University STAMINA trial show the lifestyle intervention reduces fatigue and improves cancer-specific outcomes.

The Physical Toll of Androgen Deprivation Therapy

About 300,000 patients are prescribed androgen deprivation therapy at some point in their treatment pathway to slow prostate cancer growth. While effective at slowing growth, the hormone treatment causes side effects, including fatigue, weight gain, and muscle loss.

Mike James, a participant from Shirehampton, Bristol, had his prostate removed in May 2020 and seven weeks of radiotherapy. Following those interventions, he has been receiving ADT for the past two and a half years, which left him feeling weak, demoralized, and physically restricted by arthritis in the knees and sciatica. The physical burden necessitated reliance on his spouse for lifting tasks until he enrolled in the intervention.

Insights from the STAMINA Trial

The structured regimen stems directly from findings generated by the STAMINA trial, which was delivered in partnership by Sheffield Hallam University, the NHS, and Nuffield Health. Recognized as the largest trial of its kind, the study evaluated structured lifestyle interventions integrated directly into routine oncological care.

“We’ve known for some time that programmed supervised exercise training can be beneficial in offsetting the side effects of ADT,” a spokesperson stated, describing the initiative as the first lifestyle intervention integrated into routine cancer care at scale across the NHS in England. He added that the trial data offers compelling evidence for clinicians seeking validated, evidence-based interventions to manage treatment-related side effects.

Communal Care Reduces Isolation for Cancer Patients

Beyond the physiological gains, participants highlight the distinct psychological value of a communal care setting. Steve Cottingham from Frampton Cotterell, South Gloucestershire, noted that cancer recovery can often feel isolating. Engaging with peers in similar therapeutic stages provides essential mutual encouragement.

“It can be a lonely journey with cancer,” Cottingham observed, adding that the group sessions helped him lose weight and trim his waistline despite ongoing treatment-induced fatigue. Martin Sutherland, a participant from Bradley Stoke diagnosed in 2021, echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the weekly camaraderie and shared storytelling as central pillars of the recovery process.

Ethan Paul, a rehab specialist involved with the sessions, observed noticeable improvements in participant mental health and attitude. The group environment allows patients to de-stress and openly discuss side effects that they might otherwise hesitate to raise in social settings.

Future Expansion Across NHS Oncology Pathways

Building on the documented success of the STAMINA trial, Nuffield Health has partnered with NHS trusts to launch the Cancer Activity Programme for eligible NHS prostate cancer patients. Current institutional planning includes expanding the structured lifestyle intervention to incorporate NHS breast and bowel cancer patients prior to 2030, as physical rehabilitation becomes a standard part of oncological care protocols.
