Radar Cars Begin Issuing Speeding Tickets in Toulouse adn Haute-Garonne
Toulouse, France – Drivers in the Haute-Garonne department are now facing enforcement from a new fleet of “trivialized” radar cars, deployed to curb speeding on roads throughout the region. Thes vehicles, operated by a private company under contract with the prefecture, began issuing citations this week, marking a significant expansion of speed enforcement capabilities.
The introduction of these mobile radar units aims to reduce accidents linked to excessive speed – a major cause of road fatalities – across all types of roadways, from highways to local streets. Unlike conventional fixed radar installations, these cars can monitor speed in both directions of traffic while in motion, and operate without visible flashing lights, increasing their stealth and enforcement potential.
Currently, drivers will not be penalized unless exceeding the speed limit by a margin of 10 km/h for limits under 100 km/h, or 10% for limits exceeding 100 km/h. This translates to a threshold of 146 km/h on highways, 124 km/h on expressways, and 61 km/h in urban areas.
These new radar cars will cover approximately 13,000 kilometers each month, focusing on routes identified by prefecture services in consultation with police, based on “local accident criteria” and areas with a history of speeding-related incidents.
The Haute-Garonne is following the lead of neighboring departments in the Occitanie region, where similar radar car deployments have been active for several months. in the Aveyron department, for example, the prefecture stated that speeding remains a primary factor in road deaths.
A total of 126 of these vehicles have been deployed across three southern French regions: PACA, Auvergne-Rhône-alpes, and Occitanie. While the specific number of cars operating within Haute-Garonne has not been disclosed, officials confirm they are now actively issuing speeding tickets.
