Prime Video Reveals Full-Length Trailer for Blade Runner 2099 at New York Comic Con

Prime Video released the first full-length trailer for Blade Runner 2099 during its panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, following an initial teaser debut at San Diego Comic-Con in July. The upcoming limited series is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on November 25.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • The Premise: Set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, the series explores a world where a replicant uprising has occurred and humans have lost their dominant status, according to showrunner Silka Luisa.
  • The Lead Characters: The narrative tracks Olwen (Michelle Yeoh), a dying Replicant Blade Runner, alongside Cora (Hunter Schafer), a human fugitive posing as a Replicant.
  • The Creative Team: Showrunner Silka Luisa leads the production alongside executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, with original star Harrison Ford confirmed by showrunner Silka Luisa not to appear in the series.

The Aftermath of the Replicant Uprising Fifty Years Later

During the Saturday evening panel at New York Comic Con, showrunner Silka Luisa outlined the narrative baseline of the new series. “We are 50 years after Blade Runner 2049 and, bad news, the worst has happened,” Luisa stated, as reported by gizmodo.com. “The replicant uprising that has been bubbling up in the films has taken place and the humans have lost. So the creations have surpassed their creators.”

Expanding on the thematic scope, Luisa noted that the original 1982 film examined mortality on a micro level through Roy Batty’s fight for extended life. “This show asks that same question but on a macro level,” Luisa said. “Mankind—what happens when our time is running out? And are we going to accept that loss? Can we hold on to our humanity during it?”

Character Dynamics and Production Design Details

Meanwhile, Hunter Schafer’s character operates as a fugitive hiding from LAPD Blade Runners after her workplace is raided, eventually going undercover as an LAPD Blade Runner to protect her younger brother.

Michelle Yeoh described her character as acutely aware that her operational window is closing. “She knows the time is running out, and she’s a character that doesn’t like to leave things unfinished,” Yeoh said during the panel. Visual signifiers highlight this physical decay. In an exclusive clip, Yeoh’s character displays blue-toned nail beds. Luisa explained that this detail references the original film’s depiction of Roy Batty, serving as a biological marker of failing circulation as heart function shifts under manufactured mortality.

Addressing the aesthetic framework, Luisa explained that the series required a distinct third visual identity distinct from Ridley Scott’s 1982 original and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel. “The show is really about a birth,” Luisa said. “It’s about the birth of a city, of a society, of our characters, and it’s really the dawn of this new era. And in terms of that, when I think of a birth, I think it’s hot, sticky, bright, chaotic, and that’s where the environment came from.”

Absence of Rick Deckard and Future Era Focus

Addressing fan speculation regarding the original franchise protagonist, Luisa confirmed in September that Harrison Ford will not reprise his role as Rick Deckard. “Harrison Ford is not in the show,” Luisa stated. Both reporting outlets noted that the conclusion of Blade Runner 2049 successfully wrapped Deckard’s narrative arc, leaving room for new characters to explore the expanded universe.
