President Trump Establishes Oval Office as National Monument
Proclamation Designates White House Workspaces as Protected National Site
President Donald J. Trump signed a proclamation establishing the Oval Office, the Outer Oval Office, and the Cabinet Room as the Oval Office National Monument. The designation places the principal working spaces of the presidency under the Antiquities Act to guarantee long-term preservation, proper care, and formal management.
The action elevates the workspace above its previous status as a National Historic Landmark. For nearly a century, the Oval Office has served as the primary office for the leader of the nation, hosting decisions of significant domestic and international consequence.
Under the terms of the proclamation, the Secretary of the Interior must draft a management plan in coordination with relevant executive agencies and the Committee for the Preservation of the White House. The directive requires officials to document, review, and evaluate alternatives prior to making any substantial alterations or demolishing the space, ensuring that modifications align with its national historic significance.
Capital Restorations and Architectural Mandates Precede Monument Status
The monument designation builds upon a series of capital improvement and architectural initiatives undertaken during the administration. In August 2025, President Trump mandated that all federal public buildings adopt classical architecture to honor traditional design and foster civic pride.
Efforts to restore historic and civic infrastructure across Washington have included cleaning hundreds of graffiti sites, repairing more than 2,300 light fixtures, fixing dozens of fountains, and restoring the Reflecting Pool. Additional projects feature the reinstatement of the National Garden of American Heroes, the construction of a new Triumphal Arch, and the expansion of the East Wing to incorporate a White House Ballroom designed to accommodate major state functions without taxpayer expense.
The Oval Office stands as one of the most recognizable structures in the country, having witnessed decades of historical events. The new monument status ensures that its physical character remains protected through formal federal review processes before any future structural changes can be considered.
