A 9 mm handgun recovered on a nearby bike path and ten to twelve gunshots echoing across a second-floor area marked a violent Thursday morning inside the main post office in Des Moines, Iowa. Jennifer Christine Pledger, 39, of West Des Moines, shot two female co-workers before fleeing the building on Nov. 5, 2026.
Attempted Murder Charges Filed Against West Des Moines Suspect
Authorities booked Pledger on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of willful injury causing serious injury, and intimidation. Des Moines police stated that the suspect stood over one victim after shooting her and fired again. As Pledger fled the facility, she continued shooting. A male employee suffered injuries in a fall while trying to escape the building. Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek reported that officers responded within three minutes of the 9:10 a.m. calls, detaining Pledger without resistance by 9:21 a.m. along a nearby bike path.
Victims Recovering in Stable Condition Near the Scene
All three injured postal workers were at a hospital situated across the street from the postal facility. The victims include two women aged 45 and 53, alongside a 55-year-old man. Sgt. Parizek confirmed that none of the injuries appeared life-threatening and that all three individuals remained in stable condition under medical care. The shooting occurred on the building’s restricted second floor in an employee-only area.
Local Authorities and Schools Respond to the Emergency
Law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service alongside local, state, and federal teams, launched a joint investigation into the workplace violence. Gov. Kim Reynolds stated online that she remained in contact with the Department of Public Safety to monitor the unfolding situation. In response to the active threat, Des Moines Public Schools temporarily locked down a nearby elementary school, welcome center, and nutrition center, lifting the entry restrictions once police confirmed the suspect was in custody.
Historical Workplace Violence Precedents Across Postal Facilities
Thursday’s attack follows decades of documented security challenges and workplace studies within postal facilities. In 1986, a disgruntled worker killed 14 colleagues in Edmond, Oklahoma, before taking his own life. A similar incident occurred in 1991 when a fired worker killed four former co-workers in Royal Oak, Michigan. Those tragedies prompted a 2000 study examining workplace violence and the origins of the phrase “going postal.” Other attacks have occurred since the report, including a 2006 sorting facility shooting in Goleta, California.
