Bloom Ranch and Doctors Advocate Lifestyle Changes to Combat Chronic Illness in Black Californians
Los Angeles, CA – A growing number of California doctors are embracing a proactive approach to healthcare, prescribing lifestyle changes - including increased consumption of fresh produce and peer support – to combat chronic diseases disproportionately impacting the Black community. Initiatives like Bloom Ranch, founded in 1998 by Alina Anderson, are gaining traction as vital components of preventative care.
Chronic illnesses represent a important health crisis in California, particularly within underserved Black communities.Recognizing the limitations of customary medical interventions, physicians are increasingly turning to holistic strategies that empower patients to take control of their wellbeing. “All of us have families that could use this information,” Anderson stated, highlighting the broad relevance of accessible preventative resources.
A recent study by the California Chronic Care Coalition underscores the effectiveness of peer-to-peer support programs, which utilize self-management training led by individuals living with chronic conditions to provide role models and support. “The unifying feature of these programs is that they seek to build on the strengths, knowledge, and experience that peers can offer,” the report states.
Liz Helms, CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition, emphasized the urgent need for improved access to preventative care, particularly in underserved areas. “It’s in horrible shape. It needs to get so much better, especially in underserved areas, where the Black population has a whole set of different needs,” she said. helms, who began her advocacy work after facing denial of care in the early 1990s, also lauded the expansion of telehealth as a means to overcome barriers to access, such as transportation and distance.
Addressing a critical barrier to care, Helms stressed the importance of overcoming fear and advocating for oneself. “I had to get over my fear of going to the doctor, of not speaking up,” she shared, urging patients to “understand the baseline” of their health and to resist stigmatization.”Everyone has a right to good, quality, affordable, timely health care,” she asserted.
