Pras Michel Receives 14-Year Prison Sentence in Federal Conspiracy Case
Fugees member Pras Michel was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Thursday,November 20,after being convicted on federal conspiracy charges involving illegal foreign lobbying and campaign finance violations. The sentencing took place in Washington D.C. federal court before Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, with Michel declining to address the court following the decision.
The case centers around an extensive conspiracy to funnel millions of dollars in foreign funds into U.S. political campaigns, specifically former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection effort, through undisclosed lobbying activities. This outcome marks a important development in a case that has exposed the potential for foreign interference in American elections and the misuse of celebrity influence for political gain.
Following his prison term, Michel will serve three years of probation. He was previously ordered to forfeit $64 million linked to the alleged criminal activity.
According to the Department of justice, Michel leveraged his celebrity status and connections to influence U.S. government officials on behalf of foreign interests. Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen stated, “Mr. Michel sought to use his celebrity and access to influence U.S. government officials on behalf of undisclosed foreign interests. This is an affront to the rule of law, and we will use the full range of tools at our disposal to hold accountable those who would covertly aid foreign actors seeking to interfere with our democratic system of government.”
Erica Dumas, a spokesperson for Michel, released a statement asserting, “This is not the end of Pras’ story or legacy. He appreciates the outpouring of support as he approaches the next chapter. If you think about it, he got more time than the most egregious crimes.”
Michel is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on January 27, 2026.
