Police say 3 killed, 10 injured in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ first mass shooting

Turks and caicos Islands authorities are investigating a shooting that left multiple individuals injured early Sunday on Providenciales. Police Commissioner Fitz Bailey described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and stated that at least four suspects were involved, though no arrests have been made.

Premier Charles Washington Misick characterized the event as a “gangland-type slaying,” noting a concentration of such violence within the territory’s Haitian communities. He appealed to the Haitian community for cooperation with law enforcement, suggesting that some members possess knowledge regarding the smuggling of firearms into the Turks and Caicos Islands.

misick emphasized the unprecedented nature of the violence, stating, “what is happening here is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. This is not a situation we should accept.” The shooting occurs amidst a broader government crackdown on illegal immigration.

The United Nations humanitarian affairs office reports that an estimated 10,900 individuals of Haitian descent reside in the Turks and Caicos Islands, constituting one-third of the total population. Of these, approximately 80% are located on Providenciales, with 20% holding permanent residency status.

Acting Governor Anya Williams confirmed that the hospital on Providenciales was placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of those receiving medical care for their injuries. She also indicated that at least two of the injured individuals were transported overseas for advanced treatment.
