Poland Arrests Ukrainian Suspect in Russian-Ordered Assassination Plot Targeting Defense Representative
Polish authorities arrested a Ukrainian national identified as Serhii P. on charges of orchestrating a targeted assassination attempt against a representative of Ukraine’s defense industry in Irpin, near Kyiv, under the direction of Russian intelligence services, according to reporting from News.bg. The suspect allegedly planted an explosive device under the victim’s vehicle, which failed to detonate due to a technical malfunction before the operative fled to Warsaw.
The Mechanics of a Cross-Border Hit
The Internal Security Agency of Poland, known as ABW, tracked the suspect following the botched operation in Ukraine. According to News.bg, the explosive device was rigged to be triggered remotely via a mobile phone. When the mechanism malfunctioned, Serhii P. crossed the border into Poland, where law enforcement intercepted and apprehended him in Warsaw.
Prosecutors have formally charged the suspect with attempted murder using explosives and the unauthorized possession of explosive materials. Under Polish penal statutes, he faces a minimum sentence of 15 years behind bars or life imprisonment.
A Broader Pattern of Hostile Intelligence Operations in Poland
The arrest in Warsaw does not stand as an isolated incident.
On August 13, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the arrest of a Russian national who had been actively recruited by Russian intelligence to assassinate an individual deemed inconvenient to the regime in Moscow, as reported by News.bg. That apprehension followed a separate violent event in July, when Russian caricaturist and artist Semyon Skripetskii—known for his vocal criticisms of Russian President Vladimir Putin—was shot and killed in the Polish border town of Biała Podlaska, near the frontier with Belarus. Belarusian nationals were subsequently detained in connection with that homicide.
Judicial and Diplomatic Fallout
In related judicial actions, Polish courts recently handed down a 23-year prison sentence to a Russian citizen convicted of espionage activities conducted in favor of Poland, as documented by the state news agency BTA.

The Russian Embassy in Warsaw has declined to comment on the ongoing investigations and arrests, leaving diplomatic friction at an impasse.
