Poco X8 Pro Max: 8500mAh Battery & Powerful Specs Now in Romania

Romania has grow one of the first European countries to officially offer a smartphone with an 8,500 mAh battery, the Poco X8 Pro Max, launched this week by Xiaomi’s Poco sub-brand. The device’s release challenges expectations about the availability of high-capacity battery phones in Europe, which have been limited by new regulations.

For some time, smartphones released in China have increasingly featured large batteries, often exceeding 6,500–7,000 mAh. This trend has been driven by advancements in silicon-carbon battery technology, allowing manufacturers to significantly improve device autonomy. Though, these models have typically been unavailable in Europe due to restrictions imposed by the European Union.

The Poco X8 Pro Max promises up to three days of battery life with normal use, or over 74 hours of talk time, 16 hours of video calls, and 15 hours of continuous gaming, according to Xiaomi. The phone is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s processor built on a 3nm process, 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and 256 or 512 GB of UFS 4.1 storage. It also features ray tracing, WildBoost optimization, and a substantial 5,800 mm² 3D IceLoop cooling system.

The device boasts a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2772 x 1280 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, a touch sampling rate of 480 Hz (and up to 2560 Hz in Game Turbo mode), and a peak brightness of 3,500 nits. The Poco X8 Pro Max is currently priced at 2,099 lei.

The Poco X8 Pro Max features a dual-camera system on the rear, with a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens (with OIS and EIS) and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The front-facing camera is 20 megapixels. The phone also carries IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K certifications for dust and water resistance, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. It weighs 218 grams and measures 162.9 x 77.9 x 8.2 mm.

The availability of phones with batteries exceeding 6,000 mAh in Europe has been hampered by the EU’s battery safety regulations, adopted in July 2023 (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542). These regulations impose strict requirements on the chemical safety, recyclability, and physical form of batteries, including size limitations based on thermal dissipation and testing standards for impact, pressure, and temperature. Manufacturers are currently seeking solutions to comply with these norms without compromising performance or increasing device size.
