Sony Reportedly Developing New Handheld Console to Rival Nintendo Switch

Oslo, Norway – November 16, 2023 – Sony is reportedly developing a successor to the PlayStationPortal, perhaps positioning the new device as a direct competitor to Nintendo’s forthcoming Switch 2, according⁣ to sources familiar ‍with the matter. the project, internally codenamed “Canis,” aims to address limitations of the current Portal and deliver a standalone handheld gaming experience.

This development marks Sony’s most notable foray into ⁤the dedicated handheld market as the 2011 launch of the PlayStation Vita.⁢ While the 2023 PlayStation⁤ Portal requires a connection to a PlayStation 5 console to stream ⁢games, the rumored “Canis” is expected to feature independent processing power, allowing users to play titles without a base ‍station. This shift in strategy comes as Nintendo prepares to release its next-generation console, widely anticipated to raise the bar for handheld gaming.Sony previously dominated the handheld space with the PlayStation Portable (PSP),⁢ launched in 2004, but has largely exited the market in recent years. The potential arrival of a new, standalone Sony handheld could considerably disrupt the ‌portable gaming landscape, offering consumers a new choice beyond Nintendo’s established dominance. If the project remains on track, ⁢the new console ‍could reach consumers as early as 2027.
