PlayStation 6 Reportedly Planned with Detachable Disc Drive
Sony is considering a modular design for its next-generation PlayStation console, potentially launching with a detachable disc drive. According to a new report from Insider Gaming, this approach-allowing consumers to choose between a fully digital console or one with disc drive functionality-is now a key part of Sony’s long-term strategy.
Sources indicate the decision is “locked” internally, building on the success of the detachable disc drive option for the PlayStation 5, which reportedly exceeded Sony’s sales expectations. The move is also driven by current global economic uncertainties, including trade wars and fluctuating tariff rates, which impact supply chains. A modular design is expected to simplify the PlayStation 6’s manufacturing process and reduce shipping costs.
The report also suggests sony is preparing a revised version of the PlayStation 5 Slim, potentially featuring reduced storage capacity and a lighter weight, further demonstrating a focus on cost savings.
Customers would have the option to purchase the PlayStation 6 as a fully digital unit, buy a package including a disc drive, or add the drive as an upgrade at a later date.
