Pixel Watch Step Counting Bug: March Update Overcounts Steps – Fixes Available

March 24, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Google Pixel Watch owners are reporting a recurring issue with step counting accuracy following the March 2026 software update. While a previous bug caused the watches to undercount steps, numerous users are now finding their devices are significantly overreporting activity levels, even during periods of minimal movement.

Reports began surfacing on Reddit, with users like Due_Reception_1022 sharing screenshots showing thousands of extra steps added to their daily totals. The inflated step counts are not isolated incidents, affecting multiple Pixel Watch generations. The discrepancy extends beyond simple step numbers, distorting calculations for calories burned and distance traveled, according to user accounts.

The problem appears to be manifesting differently for some users. Several individuals have noted that while the Pixel Watch display itself shows a relatively accurate step count, the associated Fitbit app reflects the inflated numbers, suggesting a synchronization or data processing issue within the app itself. Google has not yet publicly acknowledged the problem.

However, a potential workaround has emerged within the user community. Multiple Redditors, including Unknown_2619 and Possible_Law8357, have found success by clearing the Fitbit app’s cache on both their Pixel Watch and connected phone, followed by a restart of both devices. Other suggested fixes include updating the Health Services app on the Pixel Watch or, conversely, downgrading the Fitbit app on the phone to a previous version.

The step-counting issues are not the only problems reported following the March update. Some users have also indicated that skin temperature and SpO2 monitoring functionality on the Pixel Watch 4 has been disrupted.

As of late Tuesday, Google has issued a statement indicating a fix for the initial step-counting undercount issue. The company has not addressed the reports of overcounting or the problems with skin temperature and SpO2 monitoring. Google has directed users experiencing persistent issues to consult its support resources.
