Pikachu & Pokémon: What Your All-P Meal Reveals | BuzzFeed
The Pokémon Company International is celebrating the 28th anniversary of Pikachu, the electric mouse Pokémon that has become a global cultural icon. First appearing in the 1996 video games Pokémon Red and Blue, Pikachu’s enduring popularity extends far beyond gaming, encompassing trading cards, animation, and merchandise.
Pikachu was originally designed by Atsuko Nishida at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori, with Sugimori finalizing the design. The Pokémon, classified as an Electric-type, is characterized by its yellow fur, lightning bolt-shaped tail, and red cheek pouches capable of storing electricity. According to the official Pokémon website, Pikachu discharges energy from these pouches when angered.
The character’s prominence surged with its central role in the Pokémon anime series, where it serves as the companion of protagonist Ash Ketchum. Ikue Ōtani has been the primary voice actor for Pikachu across various media, though other actors, including Kate Bristol and Ryan Reynolds, have also voiced the character in specific projects. Reynolds voiced Detective Pikachu in the 2019 film of the same name, while Kaiji Tang voiced the character in the video game and short films.
Pikachu’s evolutionary line includes Pichu, which was introduced in later games, and Raichu. However, a unique quirk exists within the original Pokémon Yellow Version: a Pikachu received at the beginning of the game will refuse to evolve into Raichu unless traded to another save file. This detail, noted by Bulbapedia, highlights the character’s special status within the franchise.
Currently, Pikachu boasts a Gigantamax form available in Pokémon Sword and Shield, featuring an expanded body and towering tail, and a unique G-Max move, G-Max Volt Crash. The Pokémon’s stats, as detailed in the Pokémon Database, include 35 HP, 55 Attack, 40 Defense, 50 Special Attack, 50 Special Defense, and 90 Speed. Its abilities are Static and, as a hidden ability, Lightning Rod.
The Pokémon Company International continues to expand the Pikachu brand with new cards and appearances in ongoing games like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A. The company has not yet responded to inquiries regarding future plans for the character beyond scheduled releases.
