Manchester Metropolitan University Revokes Honours for Peter Mandelson Amid Epstein Controversy
Manchester, UK – Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has rescinded all honorary awards presented to Peter Mandelson following recent disclosures regarding his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The move comes days after Mandelson was removed from his post as UK ambassador to the USA by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Mandelson, a key figure in the creation of New labor, served as chancellor of MMU between 2016 and 2024. He received an honorary doctorate upon his appointment and a commemorative medal at the conclusion of his tenure.
The university confirmed the revocation of these honours, stating they were rescinded “following the revelations that have come to light in recent days.” A spokesperson for MMU said the decision was made after it was revealed Mandelson sent supportive messages to epstein while he faced sex offences charges.
The university’s board of governors had previously discussed Mandelson’s links to Epstein during his chancellorship, after a photograph of the two surfaced publicly.”At that time we were reassured that there was no ongoing connection nor anything that would compromise Lord Mandelson’s position,” the spokesperson stated.
MMU emphasized its support for Epstein’s victims, adding, “Our thoughts are with the victims who were subjected to the appalling crimes committed by Jeffrey Epstein and to all those who continue to be affected today. The University no longer has any ties with Lord Mandelson.”
Mandelson was appointed as ambassador to the USA in December 2024. Epstein died by suicide in the metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
