Peru US Dollar Falls to Lowest Level Since January 2020

August 27, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The Peruvian sol strengthened significantly as the United States dollar closed at S/ 3.3430, marking its lowest level since January 28, 2020, according to data from the Central Reserve Bank of Peru. Driven by robust copper prices and cautious global investor sentiment ahead of critical Federal Reserve policy decisions, the exchange rate fell 0.12% from the previous session.

Market Drivers and Global Commodity Influences

Foreign exchange markets experienced broad shifts as international investors weighed upcoming economic indicators from the United States. According to Jorge Luis Huayta, a foreign exchange trader at Kambista, market participants adopted cautious stances while awaiting clarity on future interest rate trajectories from the Federal Reserve. Attention centered on upcoming Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation metrics and second-quarter economic growth data.

Simultaneously, commodity markets provided strong tailwinds for the Peruvian economy. Data compiled across financial reports indicate that copper advanced 1.37% to reach $6.79 per pound. Conversely, West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated 3.39% to settle at $82.13 per barrel, influenced by expectations of diplomatic developments in the Middle East. Gold remained stable near $4,649 per ounce, while silver slipped 0.13% to $68.84 per. Strong copper valuations directly increased foreign exchange inflows through the national trade balance, reinforcing local currency stability.

Local Economic Pressures and Central Bank Intervention

Domestic factors amplified the downward pressure on the greenback. Corporate cash flows tied to favorable metal pricing boosted dollar supply within the local market. Additionally, foreign investors demonstrated sustained interest in domestic fixed-income assets, accelerating the appreciation of the sol. Pension funds maintained mixed trading flows throughout the session.

To moderate the pace of the currency appreciation, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru intervened through a purchase swap operation valued at 400 million soles. Despite this intervention, the exchange rate maintained tight technical support levels between S/ 3.3400 and S/ 3.3420, establishing multi-year lows not witnessed since the onset of the global pandemic era.

Macroeconomic Projections and Future Outlook

The sustained descent of the exchange rate has forced economic analysts to revise year-end projections. Market consensus points toward a lower valuation for the greenback by the close of the year, outstripping earlier forecasts made by financial institutions and non-financial corporations alike.
